Partnering for Impact

The Punjab Development Commission (PDC) is facilitating the implementation and scale up of SLS in the state of Punjab by working closely with Department of Social Security and Women and Child Development (SSWCD) and the Billion Readers (BIRD) team.

PDC and SSWCD along with BIRD envision a future where all TV and film content in Punjabi Language will have Punjabi subtitles, to benefit the entire state’s population.

Adding SLS will not only benefit the hearing impaired, but it will further improve reading literacy and language skills across the state.

Over the next year, this partnership aims to implement Same Language Subtitling (SLS) on all major Punjabi TV channels across Punjab.

In Punjab,
95 percent of the population or three crore people watch TV 
for more than three hours every day.

That is a substantial amount of TV entertainment consumed over an average lifetime of 72 years.
