Indigenous Language Conservation & Promotion in Arunachal Pradesh
using Same Language Subtitling (SLS)

Across Arunachal Pradesh, dozens of Indigenous languages are at risk of disappearing. As younger generations migrate to cities and digital content grows overwhelmingly in mainstream languages, the voices of small communities fade from daily life.

With support from the Department of Indigenous Affairs, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, and in collaboration with IIT Delhi, BIRD is working to preserve and promote indigenous languages by producing animated stories with SLS (AniBooks) and also by adding SLS to folk-songs and other similar content on Doordarshan Arunprabha. Our focus being tribal languages of Arunachal Pradesh.

Why It Matters

Languages are vanishing

Each vanishing language takes with it unique cultural knowledge.

Few resources exist

Books, media, and digital tools in local scripts are rare.

Migration weakens connection

Youth leave their villages and lose touch with their mother tongue.

Stories are fading

Oral traditions, songs risk being forgotten forever.

What we’re doing

We blend community creativity, technology, and storytelling to keep Indigenous languages alive.

Tribal languages:
Idu, Adi, Singpho, Tawrã, Kaman & Tai-Khamti.

Develop Storybook PDFs & Activity Guides of the AniBooks

Tribal languages:
Galo, Nyishi, Sherdukpen, Noctes and Sartang

Add SLS to cultural content on Doordarshan Arunprabha

SLS brings these languages to life again by making people see and read their language as they hear it in songs, stories, and films.
